If you’re anything like me, you have a mile-long to-do list at any given moment, you are the acting CEO of your family’s social calendar, and you’re trying to excel in your career or build a business.
No matter how great the intentions behind “doing it all,” it often leaves us feeling depleted, overwhelmed, and without time to truly take care of ourselves. After struggling with burnout and growing tired of feeling overwhelmed, I went on a research bender to understand how I could best recharge, recuperate, and recover quickly to function at my highest level and stop feeling so poorly. If you can relate, this blog was crafted with you in mind.
In this post, you’ll find five daily habits that have changed my energy, mood, and overall health. These habits have allowed me to be a better mama, partner to my husband, and continue striving for my goals and business aspirations; maybe they’ll do the same for you!
There’s nothing quite like stepping outside, taking a deep breath of fresh air, and feeling the sun on your face. Sunlight and fresh air aren’t just feel-good elements; they are essential for our well-being. Exposure to natural sunlight boosts vitamin D levels, which can enhance your mood and energy. Fresh air can help clear your mind and improve your focus, setting a positive tone for the rest of the day.
I make it a habit to spend at least 10-15 minutes outside daily, whether it’s a quick walk around the block, enjoying your morning coffee on the patio, or simply standing in a sunny spot.
Hydration is often overlooked but paramount for maintaining optimal health. Your body needs water to function efficiently—it helps with digestion, regulates body temperature, and keeps your skin looking vibrant. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and decreased concentration. Make a conscious effort to drink more water throughout the day. I have started using an app to track my water intake to ensure I get at least 85 ounces per day.
The best advice I ever received about water intake is this: every time you take a drink, chug at least three large gulps. Yes, each and every time. Act like you’re in college doing a keg stand—except you’re standing straight up, and it’s water, not Natty Light. Your body will thank you for it.
In our hyper-connected world, it’s all too easy to fall into the trap of endless scrolling or binge-watching before bed. However, the blue light emitted by screens can severely disrupt your sleep patterns, making it harder to get a good night’s rest. Prioritize shutting off your devices at least an hour before bedtime to wind down properly. Instead, engage in calming activities like reading a book, meditating, or journaling. Quality sleep is crucial for cognitive function, mood stabilization, and overall health, so give your body the rest it deserves.
I noticed that if I read fiction before bed, I would end up reading into the wee hours to get “just one more chapter in.” So now, I read nonfiction before bed. I also noticed that if I started a TikTok scroll session on my phone while in bed, 45 minutes would disappear in the blink of an eye.
Now, every day before bed, I put my phone on its charger, plug in my Kindle, and crack open a non-fiction book. It’s magic; I am sound asleep within 20 minutes.
Incorporating daily movement into your routine can have profound effects on your physical and mental health. Regular exercise enhances cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles, and releases endorphins—nature’s feel-good hormones. I no longer feel that I have to commit to an hour at the gym to check the box of a workout; even a 20-minute walk, a quick yoga session, or a dance break in the living room counts. Find an activity you enjoy and make it a non-negotiable part of your day. Your body and mind will feel invigorated and ready to tackle anything that comes your way.
Taking care of yourself means more than just focusing on physical health—it also involves nurturing your mind and soul. Consider adding a spiritual or mindfulness practice to your day. My personal spiritual practice has fundamentally changed the way I look at, well, everything. I spend 10-15 minutes every morning engaging in mindfulness, meditation, or prayer. This results in me entering my day feeling grounded and expectant for good things to happen throughout the day.
If spirituality isn’t your thing, consider engaging in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment, whether that’s reading, painting, listening to music, or spending quality time with loved ones. Stimulate your mind by learning something new or engaging in thoughtful conversations.
Lastly, remember to feed your body in a way that honors your energy. Aim for a balanced diet rich in protein and fiber. I aim for 100g of protein per day and fiber with each meal. Don’t forget that indulgences are necessary and completely acceptable as long as you ensure you are giving your body the good fuel first. Dessert every once in a while won’t hurt a thing.
Incorporating these five daily habits into my routine has transformed my energy, mood, and overall health. If you’re anything like me, finding ways to recharge, recuperate, and recover quickly is essential to maintaining your best self amidst the hustle of life. Remember, taking care of yourself is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity.
